Herrell’s wanted greater uniformity among its stores, but the Allston store decided to retain its quirkiness and branch off on its own, the Boston Globe reports.
It’s not the first time owner Page Masse has stood up for the funky cafe she loves so much, as the Allston-Brighton TAB reported back in 2007.

Hello, Allston-Brighton. I just wanted to say that one more time, before June 25, when I will no longer be the editor of the Allston-Brighton TAB or Wicked Local Allston-Brighton.
I am leaving to become the editor of the TAB’s sister paper, the Needham Times and its affiliated Web site Wicked Local Needham.
I’m actually not saying goodbye entirely, since I do still live in A-B and will likely still see many of you around the neighborhood. If you see me, feel free to tell me what’s new and I’ll pass the information on to your new editor (whose name I won’t yet reveal, but (hint) I will say that he’s a familiar face in the neighborhood and someone you’ll welcome). I’ll still be working in the next cube over.
Allston-Brighton is a great place to live, and a rich, colorful community to cover as a newspaper editor. I’ll never forget the big stories I and the many reporters I’ve worked with have had the privilege to cover for you: the controversy surrounding the Presentation School, Boston College’s expansion into the neighborhood, the election of a new District City Councilor, Mr. Butch’s death, the closing of Marty’s Liquors, the closing of the Garfield and Hamilton Schools and much, much more.
Allston-Brighton has been through many changes these past several years and it has been an honor to witness them. Had I not been the editor of the TAB, I would never have appreciated the depth of the community I live in. I will miss this job.
I’m still here for the week though, so keep calling and e-mailing with news!

Just a couple weeks ago a guy wearing a Yankees hat in Allston was robbed. Now Boston Police are reporting a similar incident in the South End (well, the victim wasn’t robbed, but a Yankees hat was apparently the cause of a fight). From BPDNews.com:
When asked to explain how the fight began, the suspect stated it began because the other kid was wearing a New York Yankees baseball hat.
Seems like you really have to watch what you wear in Boston!
