Gorlova book sounds like a great read

I have to say that “From Boston — About Boston,” the book by Russian native Ella Gorlova sounds fascinating (see our story in the March 30 TAB).

Imagine a book about Boston geared specifically toward helping a particular immigrant population understand the city and America in general. While this seems great for the Russian-speakers in our community, I wish I could read it in English. What an intriguing insight it would offer into how one culture thinks about another.

Imagine also how interesting it would be to read about Boston history through the Big Dig project written by an engineer who has also worked on the Big Dig herself.

Oh, well. I don’t speak Russian so I won’t be able to read the book, but Julie Masis’ TAB story certainly piqued my interest.

An acquaintance of mine, Luis Fernando Velez, has written a similar kind of book, but with the Latino experience in mind: Here’s the Amazon link.

How useful for both new immigrants and folks who have been here for a while, but want to learn about the city. It’s hard enough to find out things when you speak English and have lived here for years.
