Just back from Butch’s parade

Friday night I went to Harvard Square — not because I’m that much of a Potter fan, but just because I think all the hoopla surrounding him is kind of fascinating. Ok, so I wasn’t there that long, just for under an hour around 10 p.m., but it looked kind of low key to me.

At least, it wasn’t anything compared to tonight’s memorial parade for Mr. Butch. I was just there. Now that was amazing. Harvard and Brighton Ave. were packed from one side of the street to the other w. Butch enthusiasts wearing T-shirts with his image printed on them. Young and old were there marching with the music toward the church where Butch’s memorial service would be held. I was particularly awed by the little girl wearing a Butch t-shirt and trying to convince her mother to go inside for the service itself.

The TAB recently ran an editorial reminding people to remember those homeless folks who don’t get hte kind of send-off the Mr. Butch is getting when they die. Quite frankly, very few people — whether homeless or not — probably get that kind of send-off.

It was a great evening. Generations of people who’ve been touched by Butch at different times in their lives were all there to share this single experience.
