Power outage update

Water from Monday’s snowstorm caused a problem with the underground power system, leaving 2,500 Brighton-area customers without power for an hour and a half Monday evening.

Excessive water caused a cable problem in the system, according to NStar spokeswoman Caroline Allen. The power went out around 4 p.m. and was restored around 5:30, Allen said.

Brighton Center was one of the areas affected, where all the streetlights along Washington Street were out, along with several stoplights at busy intersections, including the one at Washington/Cambridge/Winship streets.

Probably in an effort to prevent further outages, a crew with a chainsaw and woodchipper drove around Brighton around 6:45pm taking away downed branches as well as cutting some perilously balanced branches on the lines.
