Tolman, Moran endorse Ciommo
City council candidate Mark Ciommo continues to rack up endorsements in the days preceding the Nov. 6 election, as state Sen. Steven Tolman and state Rep. Michael Moran both announced their support on Tuesday.
In statements, both politicians praised Ciommo’s roots and leadership history in Allston-Brighton.
“Mark knows how to fight for this neighborhood, because he has [...]
How ironic
Last night, I was downtown to cover the city council’s hearing on towing. After three hours of listening to councilors, residents and officials from the DPW and BTD, I walked back to the parking garage at 9 p.m. and, wouldn’t you know it, my car wouldn’t start. In the end, I needed, of all things, [...]
They did it
The sign pretty much says it all. The Presentation School Foundation bought the former Presentation School building from the Archdiocese of Boston on Friday.
Despite the cool autumn temperatures, there were still plenty of elated PSF members and smiling children on hand to celebrate the monumental achievement. The PSF still has to raise $3 million to [...]
Beer!
Got plans for Saturday? If not, grab a bratwurst and a beer and support the German International School, the new tenants at the St. Anthony’s School building.
The school is holding an Oktoberfest celebration from noon - 6 p.m. at the school, 57 Holton St., Allston. They’re promising good German beer from Redbones in Somerville, [...]
McBride goes down
According to this ESPN.com story (you’ll have to scroll down a bit), Kevin McBride lost his fight against Andrew Golota at Madison Square Garden this weekend.
McBride, a native of Ireland, is manged by local philanthropist and owner of the Kells, Jerry Quinn.
Graffiti busters
Police arrested four people last week in three graffiti-related incidents. Graffiti and tagging have been seen as a blight on the Allston-Brighton community, and at last night’s BAIA meeting, Officer Steve Law said officers are making it a priority.
“We need to get on the judge and make sure they don’t get off with a slap [...]
Brighton man sentenced for beating
A Brighton man was sentenced to six months in jail and more than two years of probation for participating in the group beat-down and stabbing of a man at an Orange Line subway station.
Darren Hemingway, 18, pleaded guilty in Charlestown municipal court last week to two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, [...]
Presentation celebration
There was a Presentation School Foundation event last night at Devlin’s in Brighton Center, where they passed out an ominous flyer. It reads as follows:
It’s time to celebrate! Please join the Presentation School Foundation and special guest Mayor Thomas Menino in Oak Square. Friday Oct. 12, 2007, 3:30 p.m.DJ, cake, pizza and more!
What, exactly, the [...]
Street fair sights and sounds
Thousands of people took advantage of the perfect late-September weather to check out the Allston Village Street Fair on Sunday. In case you missed it, here’s a video of some of the highlights.
Campaign freebies
At the Allston Brighton parade yesterday, a member of Rosie Hanlon’s campaign handed me a big white knot. Two seconds later, I was almost belted in the face with another one. What were these knots being tossed to the crowd? Well, I untied mine to find out.
It seems that Rosie Hanlon and Rosie the Riveter [...]
Keeping it clean
After the marching bands, politicians, city council hopefuls and neighborhood organizations, here is the last thing people saw at the Allston Bright Parade yesterday.
They could have at least decorated the street sweepers with streamers. At least we know Brighton Avenue and Cambridge Street weren’t covered in leftover tootsie rolls all day.
(There would be more pictures, [...]
Breaking news - Jenner drops out of race
City Council candidate James Jenner dropped out of the race to replace Jerry McDermott on Monday, one week before the Sept. 25 primary election would narrow the six-person field down to two. Jenner, a lifelong Brighton resident, will now work on former opponent Rosie Hanlon’s campaign as a senior strategist.
“I’m making this decision because I [...]
Goodbye, bargains
The Hadassah Bargain Spot at 1123 Commonwealth Ave. will close it’s doors for good on Sunday. The thrift store, which has been open for 38 years, will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on its final day, manager Jacob Perlmutter said.
Hadassah, the Jewish women’s Zionist organization, sold the building recently, Perlmutter said.
Why you?
All six Allston-Brighton city council candidates came to TAB headquarters for an editorial board meeting this week, where they answered some questions and talked about their plans for improving life in A-B.
We also took a video of each candidate answering one simple question: “Why should the people of Allston and Brighton vote for you?” Click [...]
Headbutts and hugs
If you read our story about the Wai Kru gym and wondered what mixed martial arts looks like, watch the video below. Gym member RJ Canon sat down with us after a friendly match with Semen Nikulin and explained his attraction to Wai Kru and Jiu-Jitsu.
(I’d like to apologize, the video is a little shakey at [...]
A little too extreme?
As I walked out of the Honan-Allston Library yesterday, a man ran by me down Harvard Avenue in the direction of Western Avenue. Nothing unusual you say? Well, he was running BAREFOOT. At a pretty good pace, too. Plus, he had his headphones on, so this wasn’t some jog down the block for a loaf [...]
