As Seen on TV tribute

Billy Mays, the bearded man who brought us Orange Glo and OxiClean passed away Sunday.

At 7:55 a.m. his son tweeted” My dad didn’t wake up this morning.. I’m sure you’ll all hear about it. It hasn’t yet hit me but it’s about to.”

And from there a rash of tweeters sent messages of encouragement to the 22-year-old Florida resident. His twitter page has turned into a memorial for the As Seen on TV product pusher and “Pitchmen” star.

It’s funny Billy Mays was the butt of so many jokes and half the time his products didn’t work, but his death has created a void. I mean, who else can sell a cleaning agent with the energy of Richard Simmons and the appearance of Bob Vila?

In the past week the Internet has become flooded with Mays’ tributes from wear blue for Billy day to the creation of scholarships. Billy Mays was an average man who became a celebrity. He truly lived the American dream.

Calling it quits on reality TV

Thanks to reality television, eight children will be able to go back and re-watch the exact moment their parents decided to call it quits.

Now, I will be the first person to defend reality television. Let’s face it, the participants involved know the consequences of their actions and they sign on for money and fame. But in TLC’s show “John & Kate Plus 8,” young children are involved and there has to be some line drawn.

Perhaps it is because I am a grown child of a recently divorced family or maybe it is because some things just don’t need to be made into a television show but this “big announcement” crossed the line.

Monday’s episode attracted 10.6 million viewers, who I think should be asking themselves if this show should really continue. This A Team member believes the family should heal off camera. This time reality television has gone too far.

John and Kate’s big announcement

TV’s “Jon & Kate Plus 8″ are calling it quits. No, not to reality TV only to each other. The Associated Press is reporting:

The co-stars of “Jon & Kate Plus 8,” who are parents of 5-year-old sextuplets and 8-year-old twins, spoke of their decision to separate during Monday’s episode of the TLC reality series. Near the end of the hour-long episode, a title card summed things up in stark terms: It said that on Monday, “legal proceedings were initiated in Pennsylvania to dissolve the 10-year marriage of Jon and Kate Gosselin.”

Sayonara, George! ABC confirms T.R. Knight not returning to Grey’s Anatomy

LOS ANGELES (AP) - A medical mystery was solved Friday: T.R. Knight won’t be back on “Grey’s Anatomy” next season.

“Leaving `Grey’s Anatomy’ was not an easy decision for me to make. I am extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to play this character and will miss my fellow cast and crew very much,” Knight said in a statement.

He also thanked fans for their support, but conspicuously didn’t mention series creator and executive producer Shonda Rhimes.

Knight, who played Dr. George O’Malley, had seen his role diminished this season and asked to be let out of a contract that still had three years to go. In the season finale, his character had been injured Á fatally, it appeared Á as he saved a woman from a bus collision.

In a statement from ABC announcing Knight’s much-rumored departure, Rhimes wished Knight “the best in his future endeavors” on behalf of the show’s “family.”

“He is an incredibly talented actor and a person whose strength of character is admired by all of us,” Rhimes said.

Katherine Heigl’s character, Dr. Izzie Stevens, also appeared to have an uncertain future after brain surgery in the May finale. But Heigl will return to the show, ABC said Friday.

Heigl had previously expressed discontent with the writing for her character and, with steady film roles, was considered a candidate for departure. In March, however, she said she was ready to stay and the decision rested with producers.

Although “Grey’s Anatomy” features an ensemble cast that includes stars Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey, Heigl is a key part of the top 10 show.

Knight, who has a theater background, is said to be weighing stage projects as well as films for his post-“Grey’s” life.

He was part of a tumultuous chapter in the history of the show, which debuted in 2005. In 2007, co-star Isaiah Washington was dropped from “Grey’s Anatomy” after using an anti-gay epithet backstage at the Golden Globe Awards while denying he’d used it previously on the set against Knight, who is gay.

My secret is out

“Hannah Montana” is on my list of favorite TV shows.

That’s right I am a 26-year-old non-mother who enjoys watching the Disney Channel. My viewing habits are not limited to the teenage singing sensation who can trick classmates by wearing a wig, I also watch the “Suite Life of Zack & Cody.” I watched, by choice, the first “High School Musical” twice. The second was a sing-along version, and yes I did follow the bouncing ball.

With all the “adult” dramas ending for the season, I find my self flipping over to the Disney Channel or The N. Then again programming on The N is more adult, with endless marathons of “Degrassi” - the Canadian drama that tackles issues like teen pregnancy, addiction and rape.

Now I can’t be the only one who enjoys these preteen sitcoms. So I ask the A Team reader: What is your secret show?

It was all over on Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, the night “Dawson’s Creek” first aired on the WB. In my bedroom, I had an old black and white television set hooked up to rabbit ears, my parents called it retro and I was a gullible high school student. Every week I watched as Joey struggled to get Dawson’s attention and I thought: “That’s me. I’m Joey.” Then the waterworks started.
