Behind the Times

I like to win, but who doesn’t? The Times & Courier pulled in a pretty hefty award last Friday when the New England Newspaper Association named us Newspaper of the Year of newspapers with 5,000 circulation or less. We joined ranks with other circulation class winners including the MetroWest Daily News, the Concord Monitor and the Portsmouth Herald.
As a resident of the second smallest town in the commonwealth I take pride when our little town of Clinton — along with Lancaster — receives region-wide recognition. You may remember our several awards earlier this year from the New England Press Association for general excellence, social issues and investigative reporting. I’ll say again what I said then, we may take home the plaque, but the award really belongs to our towns, which continue to impress outsiders with their many unique personalities and people passionate about the place they call home.
Now about that plaque — man, you could mount a deer head on that thing. But the bigger question is why do I look like such a dork accepting it? And who was it anyway back in the history of photography that first said, “Hmm, well, why don’t you grab the plaque with one hand, shake hands with the other and look at the photographer and smile.” Yeah, that looks real natural!
