Have gun, will … get wrestled to the ground?

Debates over the Second Amendment aside, there’s something about the site of a concealed weapon that just doesn’t sit well with some folks. A man crashing a Clinton party recently found that out when after getting in a scuffle with a fellow party-goer someone noticed he was carrying a gun. Others wrestled him to the ground and took it away.

According to police, the gun was legal.

Having just returned from a trip to Idaho where I lived for two years, I have to say guns mean different things depending on where you live. When I worked as a teacher in Idaho, probably 1/3 of the high school students I taught had guns. They kept them at home for weekend shooting or even had them slung up in the back of their trucks. It never bothered me a bit. Of course, a trip to the mall over there usually turns up a fair share of big belt buckle, cowboy hat wearing figures as well. If I were teaching in Mass. today, I think it might make me stop and think if my students were toting guns. Perhaps it’s just our cultural differences or our tendency to associate weapons with gang violence here in the east that makes a difference. I don’t know.
