Dying isn’t cheap, but it’s cheaper here

Check out Times & Courier reporter Patrick Brodrick’s story today on the cost of being buried in Clinton. We all know the cost of living is rising, but apparently the cost of dying is, too.

Right now it only costs about $200 to get buried on a weekday — $350 on weekend. DPW Director Chris McGown is suggesting it be raised to be more inline with other towns. Given Clinton’s constant fiscal difficulties, that makes sense. The more remarkable part of the story, however, is that, according to McGown, it actually costs the town to bury folks on the weekend — the fee doesn’t even cover the labor. Hmm… I wonder if spikes in deaths correlate to budget shortfalls?

Sorry. Trying to post a blog on a laptop while feeding a fussy 2-year-old is probably not the best recipe for good writing. I get a little jumpy to post things quickly sometimes. On a separate note, Lancaster just raised its burial fees as well. The print edition next week will also include a comparison of rates in nearby towns.

A more interesting story might actually be the total cost of dying these days — between funeral costs, burial, settling debts, etc. Sometimes it feels like those piling bills will kill us — but apparently, even after we’ve died they’re not done with us.
