Wal-Mart won’t be coming down the pike

Big news in Lancaster today — Wal-Mart has canceled its plans for a Supercenter” on Old Union Turnpike.
Company spokesman Christopher Buchanan says the Friday announcement comes after Wal-Mart decided to slow down building Supercenters — its largest stores — in the U.S. The company will still build a Supercenter in Leominster, only three miles away from the proposed Lancaster store.
In a phone call this afternoon, Buchanan thanked the “great community support” Lancaster citizens and government had given the project. He also noted that Wal-Mart has terminated its agreement with the landowner, which means if it eventually decides to build in Lancaster, it would have to go through the land-acquisition phase once again.
We’re the first ones online with this story, out of the four newspapers covering Lancaster. We’re looking for your opinions, though, to put this announcement in perspective. Leave a comment on this blog, call the Speak Out line at 978-365-3177, or e-mail us a letter to the editor.
No time to rest. We have calls in to the selectmen and the folks at Our Lancaster First, a group that formed to oppose the store. More to follow.

I am sure the thousands already spent and probably millions it most likely would’ve spent in attorney fees fighting “OLF” had something to do it. Ditto for the town of Lancaster, at least now we won’t have to have an overide to pay for the legal fees it would’ve cost us taxpayers.
Woohoo — Goodbye Walmart and Good Riddance!!!
I can not be any happier that Walmart is hitting the road (not the Turnpike).
Buchanan’s comments regarding Walmart’s Lancaster opposition and Walmart’s thoughts that nothing was wrong with having two stores so close together are completely bogus, but what do I care how he wants to save face and throw public relations mumbo-jumbo around. Walmart’s gone — hit the road Jack (or should I say Chris).
