Only two days short of 108 years old, Lancaster’s oldest resident died this week.  The funeral is Saturday.

Imagine what she saw in more than a century of life. She moved to South Lancaster in 1922, already an adult on her own. You or your parents may remember a time before the Interstate highways. Mary Lavigne arrived in Lancaster before there were state routes.

Two years after moving here, she would have gone to the polls in Lancaster to vote for or against President Calvin Coolidge. If she were a baseball fan, she might have followed the Red Sox’ world championship win four years earlier, and then waited all 86 years for the next one.

After a long journey, Ms. Lavigne, rest in peace.
