Behind the Times

Still skeptical

One of the fun parts of being a newspaper editor is that you meet the most opinionated people in your town. In my case, coming to Clinton earlier this year, I had two of them on my staff — reporter Patrick Brodrick and columnist Tony Marini.

As they represent polar opposites, both on Clinton issues and national politics, there’s no love lost between them, especially as Tony has continued to take an active role in town politics (most recently pushing a proposal to build wind turbines on town land), while Patrick has retained his self-appointed job as watchdog over the select board even after his departure as Times & Courier reporter in September. The two have emerged as Clinton’s most prolific bloggers and Patrick, for one, hasn’t held back on criticizing anyone. So seeing this on Patrick’s blog this weekend didn’t surprise me:

Marini, who at the time didn’t believe global warming was as big a deal as 95 percent of the world’s scientists were making it out to be, told me that one of the largest culprits behind global warming was an African Termite with a bad case of gas. I don’t know if Marini’s views on global warming have shifted or not, but I find it ironic he is leading the charge to get Clinton to start thinking outside of the box when it comes to energy consumption, and I think he should be commended for his efforts, and urge everyone to support the commission’s efforts.

Although I must admit it struck me as coincidental to see Marini’s post on Saturday:

… There are, to the consternation of the “scientists” and the damnation of the media, critics of this proposed CO2-induced sauna of our demise. There are many climatologists, Earth scientists, physicists and other scholarly folk out there who don’t subscribe to the global warming theory. No, you won’t hear their names and they won’t be transformed into icons of sanity in the face of madness …

Clear enough answer?
