Tomorrow: Candidates and Claus

The political battle between Mary Ann Castillo and her critics leads the front page of our Dec. 20 edition, but two other items on the front get prominent play elsewhere in the paper — a tip of the cap to the holiday season we’re in now.

Times & Courier front page, Dec. 20, 2007One is the Christmas holiday, illustrated with the Jolly Ole Elf on the front page and several stories inside the paper: Congregation Shaarei Zedech at the Community Cafe Dec. 25; the annual “Yes, Virginia” editorial on the Viewpoint page; public service items from the state attorney general and from Blue Cross Blue Shield about holiday shoppers’ rights and winter workouts, respectively; and a scientific explanation for Santa from our sister paper The Patriot Ledger in Quincy.

And then there’s the other big ongoing story of the season, closer than you think — the Feb. 5 presidential primary. The folks we spoke to on the Democratic side mostly support Hillary Clinton; those from the GOP are not sure who gets their vote. Tell us who gets yours — write a comment here or send in a letter to the editor.

Rick Holmes, opinion editor at The MetroWest Daily News, doesn’t tell us who he wants to see elected, but he gives us several reasons to consider the “second-tier” candidates in his commentary on Page 8. Also don’t miss a story on the economic and political impact to Massachusetts of an earlier primary — none — on Page 10, and the order of the ballot, on Page 4.

Also on the front page: Our report on the new focus at AUC, and a feature about a Clinton resident retiring as principal of Maynard High School after 40 years in education.

And: Merry Christmas!
