As you know from checking back every day at wickedlocalclinton.com, Swiss foodmaker Nestle is the only bidder for water from the Wekepeke Reservation in Sterling. Now that the bid is public, Clintonians and Sterlingites are taking a closer look at the legality of the deal — whether Clinton has a right to sell water to a corporation. One lawyer in Sterling says it doesn’t, and we’ve got his story on Page 1 this week.

Also on our cover are a pair of stories on upcoming town elections. We have an exhaustive profile of all five Parks and Recreation Commission hopefuls in Clinton — yes, there are five, even though one in particular seems to have driven the conversation so far. We’re also breaking the news that Eugene Christoph, longtime Lancaster Planning Board member and former ZBA member and moderator, is stepping down from his post by not running for re-election. We sat down to interview him and discovered that Christoph — who always seemed the consummate Yankee townsman — is actually from Erie, Pa. And we got some other insights, too.

Inside the paper, don’t miss updates on the Ciccone Chiropractic leprechaun hunt in Clinton — it’s still on — and Lancaster ballot nominations, which closed Monday. With the surprise withdrawals of Christoph and incumbent Moderator Stanley Starr Jr. from the running, John Sonia vs. Shawn Winsor for selectman is now the only contested race.
