Independent thinking

Say what you will about Patrick Brodrick’s writing style or his politics, but he’s done something today a lot of his critics thought they’d never see — criticized selectmen Mary Rose Dickhaut and Kevin Haley.
He doesn’t detail any policy disagreements with them, or paint them with the demonic brush he uses for Clinton’s other three selectmen, but he’s disappointed in their failure to participate in a discussion earlier this month about restructuring Clinton government. Or, as he puts it, “their stomp-their-feet, take-my-ball-and-go-home attitudes.”
I had to call the National Weather Service this morning to make sure it’s still a toasty 100-plus degrees in Hades, as this latest post puts Patrick on the same side of an argument as his archenemy Selectman Joe Notaro, who made the same case two weeks ago.
We shouldn’t expect Brodrick to line up with the two against the three at every turn, however. He notes today that he’s been accused of shilling for all sides in the past. That’s what happens to folks who care about truth and fact more than about personalities — good journalists, and good citizens, to boot. We try to call a spade a spade, even if it does mean disagreeing with someone we respect and support.

Mike,
Let’s not get too giddy here and give him undue credit for his apparent awakening in criticizing his two political soulmates! I see something more sinister in his actions…like a case of addition by subtraction. He’s got absolutely nothing to lose by giving what amounts to a velvet glove slap to his two favorite Selectpeople.
No, I think he spent all night sharpening his crayons and needed a target, any target to vent at, and those two by their actions conveniently lined up in his crosshairs. Seems that the other three oft-criticized Selectmen (Joe, Bob and Tony) didn’t sin large enough recently in his eyes (perhaps he has a tough of flu?). So, with pointed crayon in hand he went after his REAL target first…Dr. Greg Stahl, who he called things that would be censored in a proper newspaper. Obviously he didn’t fully envenomate Dr. Stahl…there was plenty of poison left, so way not appear egalitarian in his vituperations…albeit with a wink, wink, nudge, nudge.
This couldn’t possibly hurt his image to have the appearance of his widening his field of criticism. But it also allowed him to get those few extra body shots against the two incumbents standing for re-election by first defaming Dr. Stahl (who they have supported in his political ambitions) and reminding us of the failings of his least favorite public servants.
