When you can’t make your own cakes

Cakemommy didn’t make this cake. Really.
While I pride myself on my cakes, if I can’t make my own, Lyndell’s Bakery in Somerville is my best bet. Without batting an eye they said “yes, we can make a Transformer cake for 40″ and let me drop off my own transformers. Bakers built the city out of yellow cake and even painted the surface of the cake like the surface of another planet.
Transformers are from another planet, you see. Even I didn’t know that. Luckily there was a 5-year-old to explain that to me.
Watermelons, even when July weather isn’t here

Watermelons sit outside the doors at Baza, where the market of all Eastern European and Russian foods was celebrating its one-year anniversary.
If you go, try the pickled baby octopus, the zucchini caviar or the baked stuffed peppers (ground chicken and pork, rice, carrots, onions, tomatoes, black pepper, salt and other spices), all in the prepared foods aisle.

You can now eat at Big Papi’s steak restaurant in Framingham

Apparently, Red Sox slugger David Ortiz is now a partner in Metro 9 Steak House.
They are apparently renaming the restaurant after him.
My suggestion: Papi’s pepper steak pit stop

Nice! I just found out about “Wicked Local Deals.” Yes, it’s run by the same media company that supports this blog, but this deals page has been a little understated on its newspaper homepages so there hasn’t been a whole lot of buzz about it. Well, no more!
Fellow foodies, you can find some great restaurants deals here and dine for half the price! Look for more restaurants to be added on to the page soon.
And the restaurants that we love should think about offering these awesome deals to their hungry patrons (and you know who you are … I’m talking to you - Oleana, Dali, Union Oyster House in North End, Dok Bua, Muqueca, Casa Portugal, Redbones)
Because we’re in a recession. Help the foodies out!

Audrey Heartburn was right about the Hen House - I tried it recently and the food was the right mix of crunchy, spicy and delicious. HUUUUGE portions too.
I especially love the array of sauces - kudos to the pterodactyl and the firehouse!
Tasting Cambridge - what a blast!

Watch Audrey Heartburn and Sir Eats-a-lot stuff their faces at Taste of Cambridge - an annual event that was bigger and better than last year’s if possible, and ending with a Michael Jackson dance session in tribute in Charles Square last week. The Cambridge Chronicle has a story too. The Chronicle takes a bite out of Cambridge from Dame of Dimsum on Vimeo. Posted on June 19, 2009 by Dame of Dim Sum I know the weather outside has been looking gloomy, but how can you be upset when there’s so many fresh strawberries to pick? You can pick your own strawberries at the Smolak Farm Strawberry Festival for the next two weekends (June 20 and 21 and June 27 and 28). And if you take the 30-minute ride from Boston up to North Andover, you can even try some of their strawberry shortcake! Posted on June 16, 2009 by Sir Eats-a-lot If you are not sure about the afterlife, try all your options at Dante’s relaunched Inferno Brunch on Sundays from 11 am to 2 pm. For $20 you will soon be able to prepare your soul for Heaven, tempt your taste buds in Purgatory, and indulge your senses in Hell. Everyone goes to heaven, but Chef Dante will permit you to choose one “purgatory” and one “hell” from his Brunch Inferno. Treat yourself to mouthwatering egg dishes, and brioche French toast as well as lunchtime favorites such as pasta dishes and burgers. The most decadent items include: HEAVEN: breakfast pastries and breads for the table Also included in the Inferno Brunch is the “Battle of the Bloody Marys” featuring the Bloody Mary’s from Hell along with Heavenly sweet Prosecco cocktails, both are priced at $9 per cocktail. Posted on June 15, 2009 by Sir Eats-a-lot Taste of Somerville was most delicious. That’s me scribbling notes after trying one of Highland Kitchen’s yummy deviled eggs. Besides that and Lyndell’s and the amazing chocolate fountain that I almost wished I could fall into, here are my top picks from the event: * Short rib raviolis - Gargoyles Posted on June 9, 2009 by Sir Eats-a-lot I cannot wait to try some of Somerville’s yummiest tonight. For those of you who don’t know, it’s Taste of Somerville and the impressive lineup of restaurants includes The Neighborhood, Rodizio Grill, Redbones, Sagra, Guru, Dave’s Fresh Pasta and many more. Given how expensive these tastes are in other cities like Boston and Cambridge, this one’s actually affordable at $25 a ticket. You can buy one at the door or online. The event is tonight at the Washington Street Holiday Inn from 5:30-7:30 p.m. organized by the Somerville Chamber of Commerce and SCM Transportation. This year’s event celebrates and raises funds for local non-profit SCM Transportation on its 25th anniversary, so let’s be generous.
More delicious proof that summer is finally here!
