Labor Day, the Schooner Festival, the first day of school — these are all signs that summer is waning. But nothing says end of summer like football. The Cape Ann Pee Wee Football League started its season Sunday, Aug. 24.

Weather channeling

While flipping around the channels Friday night, we came upon an early scene in ‘War of the Worlds’ where Tom Cruise and a little girl are running around in a storm at a seaside village that looks a bit like the Fort section of Gloucester. It occurred to us that the weather resembled the tempest we’ve been locked into for the past month or so. Just then, a tremendous bolt of lightning lit up the scene on TV. Two seconds later, Mother Nature responded with her own real-life lightning bolt over Gloucester.

Of course, then the plots diverged and Tom Cruise’s town was invaded by aliens. But at least the sun came out again in his little world.

File this one under Good Cheap Fun: Sitting on the Boulevard, watching the boats, small and large, going back and forth through the Cut.

Saturday afternoon was a perfect day for it – sunny, warm, no rain in sight.

Interesting to note, however, most of the boats that went through that afternoon were from Gloucester. Could this be another indication that gas prices are keeping folks closer to home?

Fog delay

It was a close game between the Building Center and the Patrolmen at the start of the Junior League playoffs Sunday afternoon at Parisi Field at Stage Fort Park when the weather came into play.

The teams had played for a couple of innings in the thick fog, which eventually became so thick that it was difficult to see the outfielders, never mind the baseball.

The umpires called for a five-minute fog delay and talked with the coaches about possibly moving the game to Nate Ross Field at the O’Maley School, where the fog was likely to be less thick.

But while the discussion was going on the fog started to burn off and play could resume. Eventually the Ten Pound Island fog horn stopped sounding and Dog Bar Breakwater came back into view.

The Patrolmen eventually won the game, defeating BC, the two-time reigning champs. The double-elimination tournament continues this week.

Emily Rooney and her associates on WGBH-TV’s “Greater Boston” meet every Friday for “Beat the Press.”

This week they had less than kind words for Time magazine reporter Kathleen Kingsbury who first said that teenage girls in Gloucester had formed a pact to get pregnant.

Gloucester will be featured in the August issue of National Geographic Traveler, featured as one of the “Best Short Trips in the World.”

The two-page spread has photos of Good Harbor Beach and other summer scenes of summer beauty.  It suggests including the Gloucester Marine Heritage Center and a cruise on the Thomas E. Lannon during a visit to the city.

The city can sure use the good press after the recent media barrage centered on teen pregnancy.
