Girl Scout cookie sellers presented the directors of the Greenlock Therapeutic Riding Center in Rehoboth with a check for $5,669.39. This money was contributed by troops from Girl Scouts of Rhode Island Inc. (GSRI)

Isn’t this great? I used to be a Girl Scout, and we never raised that much money selling cookies! This group of scouts have given to a worthy cause. Greenlock is a non-profit organization accredited by the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA). To learn more about the riding center, visit www.greenlock.org.

Thank you, to all the Girl Scouts of Rhode Island, for helping so much!

Breeds of horses - how many?

palomino

There are a LOT of breeds of horses…. I stopped counting at 50, and I wasn’t even out of the “C’s”!!!! For a website to check them all, go to http://www.ansi.okstate.edu/breeds/horses/

So many! My favorite breed and color is the Palomino American Quarter Horse. Here’s a little bit about them:

{From the Web site..) The modern day Palomino Horse has a legacy to follow and a promise to fulfill. This golden horse, who was the choice of ancient emperors, kings and queens, the beloved steed in Greek mythology, the subject of artists’ canvas, the pride of Queen Isabella’s Spanish court, the treasured mount of ancient tribes and companion of the Conquistadors, is still with us today. He was tamed by the Indians of the Southwest, rediscovered by today’s horse lover, made a star on the “Silver Screen” and exhibited at horse shows throughout the world.

These horses are so pretty. I almost bought one. One of my daughters was leasing a horse, and he died. I have twins, so two daughters on one horse just didn’t work. So, off we went to find a replacement. I had tried to get a Palomino, obviously, so we went to this farm in Rhode Island. We looked at her, and she was pretty enough, but she was a dapple Palomino. I had wanted a solid color. (I know, picky picky) But, when you’re spending that kind of  money, you should get what you like, right? Long story short, we all didn’t care much for her gait either, so we looked at this pretty mare and that’s how we got Maggie! She’s the best horse.. all in all, a good pick.. So… I’m still looking!!!

CBS recently did a story about an elephant and his best friend - a dog! It’s a great story! Check it out. You will have to sit through a commercial (can’t always help that), but hang in there. It’s a true testament to friendship, in all its finest forms.

This is a picture of a male, adult Goldfinch in a cup. My daughter, Lindsay, found this poor little creature outside on the ground yesterday, practically on Rte. 9. She said she had to wave off cars so they wouldn’t hit her or the bird. (I did that once, too. Drivers were patient - I mean, what can they do, run us over?)

Anyway, she took this bird to the nearby vet, where my other daughter, Megan, works. The vet determined that at least one wing was broken, she wasn’t sure about the other. It wasn’t doing too well by the time he arrived at the vet, but they said to leave it with them, and they’ll see how he does… He didn’t make it.

I was told that even IF they taped up the wings, wild birds don’t do that well in captivity, and he probably wouldn’t have made it anyway. So sad.. She tried really hard to save this bird, but he was knocked around too much. I think a car on Rte. 9 hit it as it was doing a fly-by. A few years ago, a sparrow flew right into my front right tire as I was driving by. There was nothing I could do about it, his neck was broken.

Why do they do that anyway?

I’ve been talking about this since the beginning…Check out the story that was posted today on WBZTV.com. I hope, if things do get better economically, that they bring the horses back. When you go to a concert at Gillette Stadium… you know (or at least you knew) there’d be horses managing the crowd. The police officers are always very pleasant and let you pet their horse. I always thought of that as a bonus.  Anyway.. here’s to hoping.

Poll: What did you name YOUR pet?

Isn’t this just the cutest picture? I love kittens…. Anyway, a recent AP poll out of New York, states that Rover and Fido have gone the way of the Do-Do bird. They say about half of the pet owners in the U.S., gave their pet a human-like name. Some of the more unusual names that surfaced include Hollywood and Mittens, both cats; Jibber Jack the dog, and a Beagle named Talulublue. The most popular human name given to a pet is Max, but then it was only less than two percent of those mentioned.

So, what did you name your pet? Is it after a human? Or something else? Why did you call it that? My cat’s name is Ghost. She’s gray with lots of white markings. I called her that because my next door neighbor’s son wanted to call it that when it was 4 weeks old. So, I did. My other cat, Fieval, was named after Fieval Mouskewitz, of Fieval Goes West. Yes, Fieval is a mouse, but we already had a cat back then named Tiger, so we couldn’t name him that. The kids picked Fieval, and he’s still going strong.

What’s your story?

Economy forces man to do kill his dog

An AP story out of Methuen today…. Charles Berube, 53, of Methuen, faces animal cruelty charges for allegedly killing his bulldog with a hammer. He told the police the dog was sick and he couldn’t afford to pay a veterinarian to put it down. (Just for the record, MOST humane vets will take care of this procedure for free.)

Anyway, “Spot” was 10 years old and had been sick for weeks. He had lost weight, and had swollen legs. Berube didn’t want his friend to suffer, so he killed it. This took place last July, and the jury trial is scheduled to begin Aug. 20.

Well. What do you do with this guy? He loved his pet for 10 years, it got sick, and didn’t have the money to help it. I’m sure there are a lot of people who can say they can’t afford to go to the vet. A part of me says that an owner should be able to kill his own pet, given the fact that the dog was sick. However, killing it with a hammer just sounds so barbaric. And for this, he’s being tried.  Can there be such a thing as assisted suicide for animals? Something less forceful than a hammer, please.

San Diego - rare birth of condor chick

condor

AP reports The San Diego Zoo has announced that a rare California condor chick has been hatched on a rocky cliff in Baja, Calif. The picture you see here is of a full grown Condor. Zoo officials say this chick has been immunized against the West Nile virus, after biologists rappelled 330 feet down the cliff to its nest. (How would you like to be THAT guy!) Officials say the chick is about 45 days old.

This is great news for the California Condor Recovery Program. It’s always good to read that efforts by caring people pay off.

Oklahoma, that is… A 23-year-old woman got a friend of hers to kill her Jack Russell terrier. She is now charged with skinning the puppy to make a belt out of its hide. You can’t make this stuff up, people. Is June “Abuse your animal month?” or something? Lots of crazy stories out there of people doing very, very mean things to animals of all kinds. I just can’t see it. I can’t picture it in my head.

This beauty, Krystal Lewis, and her boyfriend, Austin Mullins, were both charged with one felony count of cruelty to animals. They are being held at the Muskogee County jail on $25,000 bond EACH! (Personally, I think they should stay in jail.)  Lewis wanted the puppy, “Poplin,” killed because it was a gift from a female ex-lover with whom she didn’t get along. Sheriff Deputy George Roberson said Mullins shot the terrier 10 times with a .22-caliber pistol. Lewis then skinned the dog at her apartment and nailed the hide to a board.

And, again, maybe some counseling here would be a great idea.

Update on cat mutilations

According the AP wire from Miami, Fla., a judge has released from jail, the teenager who is accused of more than 12 cat killings. Tyler Hayes Weinman is his name, and he had posted bond before today’s hearing, but the judge wanted to hear his psychiatric evaluation. Amazingly, the judge deemed this young man “competent” to be released under electronic monitoring. The boy will be allowed to go to counseling, which is recommended by a doctor.

I sincerely hope that this young man turns himself around. With the help of a doctor and lots of counseling, perhaps he will learn the value of compassion. If not… I’m sure we’ll see him in the news again.
