Wareham Reads Together!

What happens when everyone in town reads the same book?  Well, let’s find out!  Neighbors and friends are talking about Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson.  There is an adult edition, a youth reader edition (upper elementary grades and up) and a picture book version called Listen to the Wind.

The Wareham Free Library is sponsoring five months of reading and activities, partnering with the Wareham Public Schools, the Wareham Village Association, the Onset Bay Association, and many other community organizations and businesses.  Everyone is reading and talking!  School students are reading the books as part of their summer reading requirement.  Stop by the library, The Old Company Store, or Borders, and get yours!

Prayer flags in the Tibetan tradition will be sending messages into the wind.  Look for these beautiful recycled fabric creations flying in trees and windows throughout the community.  The library and its courtyard will be full of fluttering color!   You can make yours in the Children’s Room and hang it there or take it “to go.”

Activities will include pottery and windchime workshops at the library and at the Onset Creative Arts Association, as well as mural creation, music, food demonstrations, tea parties, photography exhibits, lectures, and much more!

Check the www.warehamreads.com  and don’t miss the fun!  Reading Rocks!

Expectantly..We Wait for Spring

Funky snow mounds still linger, but it is possible to glimpse the beginning of spring.  Shoots are coming up along the driveways, bulbs pop through leaves and debris, and we can see a hint of bud on the trees.  We are hopeful and expectant, even while a flurry of snowflakes can still get the best of the afternoon.

Dreaming of trowels, rakes, and seeds?  Local nurseries and garden stands are slow to wake up for the season but some local stores are beginning to stock their shelves in preparation for weekend gardeners.

There are many websites to ease the waiting over the next few weeks.  Ideas, tips, instructions, and glorious images of flowers and fresh vegetables await!  Post a comment with your favorite gardening site to share!

Used Book Donation Opportunities

What to do with those books that seem to multiply here and there around the house?  Many of us have books no longer needed, but the idea of discarding a book seems…well…hard to do. There are a number of ways to pass on a used book that will benefit one or more organizations looking for titles you no longer need.

The Friends of the Wareham Free Library, Inc. gladly accepts donations of used, clean hardcovers and paperbacks for children and adults.  Used books are sold monthly at the Friends’ Used Book Sales at bargain prices, making these available for many readers to enjoy. Some books are accepted for the library’s collection, some are sold, and others are passed on free to children, hospitals, prisons, troops abroad, nursing homes and other destinations.  Donations can be dropped off at the library at 59 Marion Road, and letters acknowleding your gift can be provided if you leave a list of titles, your name and address.   Funds raised by the Friends at the book sales go toward buying new books, materials, and programs at the library.

Enterprising folks can sell their books online at www.powells.com, ebay.com, Craigslist.com, amazon.com and other web sites.  Often books are offered for cash or online shopping credits.  Search on Google for lots of choices.

For profit organizations such as GotBooks.com, Cash4Books.net and others accept books for cash and recycling. Receptacles are located in various locations or you can go online and learn how to send in your unwanted books or have them picked up.  Shipping is covered by some businesses if they want your titles.

It’s hard to part with a favorite title, but when you are ready, most books can be recycled for a good cause. Read on!

A lot is going wrong in the local reading world these days…by that I mean the limiting of access to the Wareham Free Library by reducing hours and staff.  In the spirit of promoting books and reading, no matter where, no matter how, there are some interesting websites and opportunities to highlight.

Want to find a free book any where in the world?  Try www.bookcrossing.com .   You can find a book in any country, take it, read it, write about it, and pass it on!  What a concept!  Sharing free books and talking about books!  Who would think of that?  (Librarians…)  Anyway, this is pretty fun.

Can’t get away from your computer?  Try www.dailylit.com .   Each day you can have a portion of a book you select emailed to you. Most titles are free.  So what if it takes you 441 emails to get through Bleak House by Charles Dickens?  Sometimes you just can’t get your hands on the book.  Seriously, if for any reason, someone is homebound and loves his or her laptop, this is dangerously cool.

One of the best online bookstore websites is www.powells.com .  The site is well organized and full of booklovers’ features.  You can read book reviews and book blogs as well as purchase new and used titles.  You can even create your wishlist and get an email when a used copy of a book you want to buy becomes available!  Each day Powell’s will email you a book review from a different reviewing source such as The Washington Post, the New York Times, Harper’s, etc.  First thing every day!

You can also sell your own books online here for book buying credits. They pay the shipping if they want your book.

The Powell’s bookstore itself is a treasure trove.  One city block, many levels, great staff and plenty of book nooks to welcome you.  Used copies sit on the shelves next to new copies so you can determine how much you want to spend.  Great book related gifts and wonderful coffee shop and wi-fi, of course. There are several other buildings to handle the overflow and text books, etc.  Worth the trip if ever you are in Portland!

For book related jewelry, ephemera, and all types of neat stuff, try www.etsy.com .  All items are handmade or vintage. I have gotten a book necklace from as far away as Buenos Aires.   Sellers are nice, stuff is reasonable, and unique.  Stop by the Wareham Free Library to check out my book jewelry!  Well, not literally “check out.” You know what I mean…   hopefully, we’re open!.  Call first or visit the website  www.warehamfreelibrary.org  for our new hours.

You can’t have too many free books to read or ways to get them.  No matter what they say.  There is nothing elitist about reading.  It is a basic activity of life.  Still, it’s a wonder and a joy.

Ciao!

Thunderstorms

Beach days abound but sometimes the family needs something else to do.   Of course, my first suggestion is to head to the nearest library where fun is free, but you would expect that from a librarian!  Books, manga, games, puzzles, computers, puppets, museum and zoo passes, new friends, art, crafts, the rocking boat, shopping for cheap used books etc.  Okay, Okay, so I’m biased.  Libraries are one of the best rest stops in the summer, rain or shine.  (New at the Wareham Free Library: a special section right up front features Broadway musicals on CD and new release DVDs!) 508-295-2343, 59 Marion Road.

Have you dropped by the Wareham Information Center this season?  There are racks of free literature guiding you and your family to fun and interesting places– local, on the Cape, in Plymouth and beyond.  Speak with the all-knowing volunteers who can help you put a day together that will please everyone: mini-putt, ice cream, antique shopping, beaches, the best seafood and chowder, jewelry and fine crafts, and more.  Did I mention beautiful, out of the way beaches?  508-291-3477  Off Main Street in the center of downtown Wareham

Information is power, especially on a rainy day in the sleepy summer!

School Vacation…Again?

Wow…here we go again, thinking of fun, renewing and inexpensive things to do with the kids if we aren’t lucky enough to be going to Disney.  Children of all ages look forward to a break from school and routine, especially at the end of a long wet winter.  And, let’s face it, who can blame them?  Even working parents can enjoy the change in routine if vacation days are well planned in advance.

Can’t get the days off? First off, if you can only grab a day or two, why not coordinate with other working parents and you can take one day and all the kids to the zoo, and then they can take another and pile the gang in the car to the Cape.  Older kids might roll their eyes at a trip to the zoo, but once they get there, it’s always fun.  Let them pack the lunches and you will all be in for some surprises.  Passes to Buttonwood Park and Roger Williams Zoo available at the Wareham Free Library 508-295-2343 extension 1011.  Read more about museum passes at www.warehamfreelibrary.org

A road trip to the Cape might be a great last minute destination if the weather cooperates.  Beach walking and looking for sea glass and other cool stuff can yield an afternoon of jewelry making and collages.  The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History and the Museum of Fine Arts have programs for children and adults of all ages.  The grounds alone are worth the trip.  If there are shoppers in your group, both museums have cool gift shops.

Why not give your digital camera a workout?  There are plenty of locations to take tons of pictures and set the kids up with loading them into the computer and sharing with relatives and friends who live a distance away.  Make some into cards and some into mugs…literally!  Try www.zazzle.com

High school students in your tribe?  Visit the library to look up potential colleges and plan a road trip to check them out.  A well planned itinerary can get you to quite a few college campuses over vacation.  Hint: they will NOT want to go.  This has to be mandatory. (Experienced parents will tell you that even the best students often resist the college visit.   This level of resistance will be topped only by the writing of the college admissions essay.)

Little ones?  Sometimes a well appointed PB & J, a fun snack and a friend can buy you a couple of hours at the beach in your favorite hoodie.  Bring a book, let the kids run, and call it a great mental health day.  “Doctor’s” orders!

The Massachusetts Dental Society Van is returning in April so that students can get FREE dental care!  Anyone up to age 18 is eligible with parental permission, and parents or guardians do not have to be present with students for the appointment.  Examinations, cleanings and emergency care will be offered in the state-of-the-art dental van by volunteer dentists and dental assistants.

The Dental Van will be on site at the Wareham Boys and Girls Club on Viking Drive on Friday, April 4th from 9 to 4.  Students should pick up information and a permission slip at the Club and sign up for a time slot.  Please call 508-295-5400 for more information.

Students may also visit the Dental Van at the Wareham Middle School on Friday, April 25th.  Schools nurses in the Middle School and Wareham High School have permission slips for students to bring back signed by parents or guardians.  Please call 291-3510 and speak to Sandy Schutt, the WHS nurse to sign up for a time on April 25th.
