Take the Wicked Local poll:

Shalane Flanagan, golden child

Shalane Flanagan and the rest of the U.S. Olympic contingent still have to wait a little over a week to begin their quest for gold in Beijing, but the former Marblehead High track star has already scored some major points back home.

Shalane Flanagan

Leading baby skin-care company Johnson’s has made Flanagan one of the stars of its new marketing campaign, “Thanks, Mom,” as part of Johnson & Johnson’s company-wide 2008 Olympic sponsorship.

In her spot, Flanagan recalls her first race as a young girl, her mom at the finish line with her arms wide open, waiting for a hug. An emotional Shalane thanks her mom for the hug that first race day and for teaching her how to walk, run and smile, even after the bad races. Further evidence of the power of a hug: Flanagan now holds the American record in the 3,000m, 5,000m, and 10,000m distances.

Flanagan should be thanking her mom for the good genes, too. Cheryl Treworgy is a former world-record-holder in the women’s marathon who has been able to follow her daughter’s success from the front row, as an official photographer for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials-Track & Field.

The 15- and 30-second spots began airing on cable and national TV July 21 and will continue through the Beijing Games. Other athletes featured are triathletes Sarah Haskins and Jarrod Shoemaker, swimmer Cullen Jones, and volleyball players Richard Lambourne and Ogonna Nnamani.

It will be small solace for those who were hoping the show would assist a deserving local family, but there will indeed be a local tie to this Sunday’s edition of ABC’s “Extreme Home Makeover.”

Abraham — or “Brahm,” for short — the stunning, coal black Friesian horse owned by Dr. Corine Barone of Marblehead, was chosen from around 2,000 horses to be featured on the hit reality show.

As reported by our sister paper, the Newburyport Current, Brahm has been enlisted to convey the “essence of Massachusetts,” appearing as part of a dramatic reenactment of Paul Revere’s ride — with hat-and-cape-clad host Ty Pennington on his back — in front of the patriotic statue in Boston. He will also appear at the Maynard home to be renovated.

Glover: Delaware Crossing “dumb and dumber”?

Most folks know of the Revolutionary War heroics of Marblehead’s favorite son, Col. John Glover, who ferried Gen. George Washington and troops across the Delaware River for a surprise attack on the Hessians at Trenton on Christmas Day eve, 1776. But, while he volunteered for the duty, was Glover optimistic about the prospects for the success of the mission? Far from it, if the 2000 USA Network documentary, “The Crossing,” is to be believed.

Yes, that is Jeff Daniels, six years removed from his star turn opposite Jim Carrey in a certain Farrelly Brothers’ smash hit, as Gen. Washington, while Sebastian Roche, as Glover, tells him his idea for the surprise attack is (we’re paraphrasing here) “dumb” and “dumber,” still.

Roche’s work as Glover did not exactly catapult him into super stardom, but he has gotten steady TV work since, most recently as the character Jerry Jacks on “General Hospital.”

Scenes from ArtWalk

WBZ Radio’s Carl Stevens, a Swampscott resident, brought his video camera along to the Marblehead Art Walk Saturday. Here’s a look at his piece, which is great (except for way too little of his mellifluous voice).

Root (and rock) for the home team

Even you don’t have Red Sox-Yankees tickets, it still may be worth the trip into town Saturday, where — for a mere $10, mind you — you can root for a “home team” of a different sort, one that pounds out its hits with a pair of guitars, a bass and a drum kit, rather than Louisville Sluggers.

The Jessica Prouty Band –composed of Jessica Prouty, 14, of Marblehead on lead vocals and bass guitar; Cam Pelkey, 14, of Marblehead on drums; Cody Nilsen, 15, of Wilmington on lead guitar; and Andy Covino, 13, of Swampscott — will be competing in the finals of the WBCN all-ages battle of the bands between 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Harper’s Ferry in Allston.

There’s also an all-Swampscott entry, Red Rock, consisting of Jimmy Legere; 15, on drums; Jeff Medoff; 16, on bass and vocals; Nick Russo; 17, on keyboards and vocals; Mark McEntee; 16, on lead guitar; and Dean Steeves; 17, on lead vocals and guitar.

The Jessica Prouty Band (JPB?), already has a single, “Saving My Sanity,” available on amazon.com and iTunes, and a full-length CD due to “drop” in July. In addition to other prizes, there will be Berklee College of Music scholarships on the line Saturday.

So what does the Jessica Prouty Band sound like? If you are curious, click at right. But caveat auditor: Big Papi has nothing on these kids in the power department.
