Romney calls relationship with Monahan ‘official’ …

Here’s the latest from the Boston Herald’s coverage of the wrongful termination suit between former Belmont Selectman William P. Monahan and former Gov. Mitt Romney: “Mitt Romney talks tough on stand”.
This is a telling exchange that might pique resident’s interest … according to Chabot, Monahan’s lawyer Richard Hayes pressed Romney about his close ties to Monahan and forced Romney to admit he never directly asked Monahan to resign.
“This is a fellow you went to when you were in need, and your church was in need, and you didn’t even give it a thought to call him,” Hayes asked.
Romney reportedly downplayed the question and said he had an “official relationship” with Monahan.
What’s interesting about this is that Monahan has always publicly denied any special treatment, favors, or anything else for Romney and now his lawyer suggests that they were close friends and their children were close friends. Opponents of the Boston Temple have always suggested that the project received preferrential treatment, lax oversight and rules and regulations bent to get the project finished. Monahan and everyone else have always denied this. And yet, here is Monahan’s attorney suggesting in open court that “your church,” meaning the Temple, “was in need,” Monahan was the man Romney went to for help. Wow.

In the 2012 race for the Republican nomination, soon-to-be-former Belmont resident Mitt Romney seems to be fairing well. Over the weekend, Romney won the CPAC straw poll: “Romney’s CPAC Speech Wows Conservatives”.
And CNN has this story and poll here, placing him in a close third behind Sarah Palin and Mike Huckabee: “GOP has 2012 gender gap, new poll says”.
We don’t know what the future holds for the Mitt on the Move blog. Unless he lands a Belmont condo, when he sells his manse, he’ll no longer be a resident and we’ll have to find something else to do with our blogging time.

According to Politics1, former Mass. Gov. and Belmont resident Mitt Romney places second in a recent poll of potential GOP presidential candidates for 2012:
A new Zogby poll for the 2012 GOP Presidential nomination shows Alaska Governor Sarah Palin in the front with 24%, followed by former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney at 18%, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal at 16%, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee at 10%, former New York City Mayor Rudy Guiliani at 5%, and Texas Congressman Ron Paul at 3%.
It seems just a tad early to be polling for 2012 but probably not too early to start running.
