Let The Sideshow Begin

The Neil Entwistle trial started this week and opening statements from Prosecutor Michael Fabbri and Defense counsel Eliot Weinstein lasted only about an hour total. Fabbri put the puzzle pieces on the table, calmly telling the jury that an awful lot of evidence points at Neil Entwistle as the killer of his wife Rachel and infant daughter Lillian Rose.  That Neil fled the country and his DNA was found on the murder weapon are among the most damning bits of information  revealed to the jury Friday. But the defense said the jury should be wary — “things are not as they appear”, Weinstein warned.   And just look at Neil’s handsome face.  By all accounts, he was a loving father and devoted husband. “He’s not the ‘type’ who kills his family”, claim Neil’s supporters (mostly on the other side of the ocean).  If this “he’s to cute to kill” idea is the theme of the defense strategy, someone should start stitching together Neil’s orange jumpsuit right now.  We all saw what the “Dream Date Ken” approach did for  Scott Peterson. He didn’t seem “the type” either — but he was.  It’s painful to look at the face of a “boy next door” husband and father and imagine him pumping a bullet into the forehead of his beautiful young wife — and then turning to gaze at the face of his sweet baby girl before executing her with a shot to the chest. Let’s hope the jury isn’t distracted by the desire to disbelieve that sometimes good-looking seemingly nice people do very bad things.
