Two-hour delay on ice

I know that when I heard school had a two-hour delay I should have thought, Oh, I suppose I will need that time to shovel out from under the ice. And help my neighbors shovel out too.

But I had that third cup of coffee instead.

My bad. I’ll try to be more helpful after work, which I got to late, on account of the ice.

Husband rushed home to meet the bus, and reports there are ice blocks on the lawn.

We’re terribly happy about that. The water melting off Walnut Hill had pooled into our street, creating our own little speed-bump of compacted ice and snow.

But right now there are town trucks moving it out of the way, dumping sand in its place. Thanks, guys!

Things to check out downtown

Half Segue, half scooter, these T-3 Motions are being touted as the new thing when it comes to neighborhood patrol. Officers are at a human height, but slightly above the crowd. (Too cold for a crowd today.) I’m also told by folks in other police departments that you can easily cover large distances on these — something you really need to do in a town the size of Natick.

I can’t stray too far from work this week, but I’m off with my darling son, who is also off from school.

Preschool, blessedly, is still in session. There are small miracles around us.

Any cool (cheap!) things I find to do in Natick, I’ll happily share with you here. Your suggestions are also welcome. (Raspberries to those who suggest I lock my keys in the car again.)

Digging out

I stood up to catch my breath after shoveling out the driveway and the back door. A foot of snow is hard work to move, and more starting coming down — so much that it muted most of the sounds around me.

Suddenly, the snow stopped and I heard the songs of bells from the churches, drifting toward me all the way from downtown. It was the only thing I heard, punctuated occasionally by a plow on the next street.

I hope whatever you celebrate this week, you get shoveled out.

Shovels, cheap

I needed to take the little snow shovel so I could dig my car out after work today, so Hubby went out to Home Depot. There someone whispered that better shovels were cheaper at Building 19.

Six bucks later, I have my own shovel.

We were standing at the bus stop just as the school bus came to a halt, when we heard screeching tires.

The guy coming down the street may have been trying to beat the red lights on the bus, but when the bus driver turned the lights on, he attempted to come to a halt.

That didn’t work really well on ice.

If you can stand it, take it easy out there. There’s a layer of ice right now under what promises to be a lot of snow.

I’d better set up the hot chocolate

Everything was going well today, that is until I locked my keys in the car with the car running, and the gas tank was on E.

Then the sleet turned to downright rain, and the preschooler didn’t want to wear his hood.

What to do? When I locked my keys in the car in 2002, it cost me $150, and that time, the engine wasn’t running. I figured I’d chalk this up to stimulating someone’s economy, and bring lunch to work for 2009.

I couldn’t figure out how to call information on my phone — I was a tad panicked and it’s been acting up — so I called 911. The folks at the State Police told me to call Natick’s non-emergency police number, but Read more
