No parking allowed

I know it’s kind of a Boston thing, but how come so many drivers ignore “no parking” signs? Here’s a car parked right in front of a sign in the alley next to Affordable Family Dental Care at 1852 Centre Street in West Roxbury. This was right after I saw a woman double-park a car in at the West Roxbury Post Office. She was headed to wait in line (who knew how long that could take?!) until the man she boxed in happened to see her coming in and told her not to block his car.

John Clifford wanted to run for the 15th Suffolk District state rep seat against incumbent Jeffrey Sanchez, but alas, Clifford did not attain the required amount of signatures. He left me a message yesterday saying that 80 of his signatures were null and void. He added that he’s looking into the matter to see what happened and if he can do anything to get on the ballot.

I’ve heard about Auntie B’s for years, I’ve written about the eatery, both the old version and now the new version. But today was the first time I actually ate some food from Auntie B’s - and it was great! I had the chicken salad with a side of coleslaw. Good stuff!
Here’s co-owner John Fortin in the kitchen slaving away.

There was a lot of excitement in the air this morning as United States Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings paid a visit to Edward W. Brooke Charter School in Roslindale this morning.
Spellings stopped by to praise the successes of this local school as well as call attention to National Charter Schools Week which was recently proclaimed as May 4-10 by Spellings boss, President George W. Bush.
First, she sat down with students in Meg Thornton’s kindergarten class for a lesson on calculating area. And then she stopped by Lana Ewings second-grade class to read and handout some free copies of the Seuss classic “Horton Hears A Who.” The Cabinet members visit ended with a short assembly that was highlighted by a thunderous drumming circle and an awesome dance routine both performed by some very talented students.

FEMA wasn’t too good at being prepared for a certain infamous emergency. But let’s hope they’re good enough to teach Ohrenberger students about emergency preparation.
FEMA is running a pilot program for New England fourth grade students to teach basic emergency preparedness skills. The Beethoven School was also selected to participate in the program.
“Sharpening emergency preparedness skills is an important project for our students and staff,” said Steve Zrike Jr., principal of Ohrenberger Elementary School. “We work very hard at this skill to ensure all of our students know what to do in case of an incident. We are pleased to participate in this training as the lessons learned in school will also help our students in their homes as they share the preparedness tips with their families.”

Remember Talula Gray? Well they closed the other week. But don’t worry 1739 Centre St. is getting a new tenant later this month with Stained Glass Works.
Among other things, Michael Willard will be selling his own stained glass works, other artists’ works, stained glass supplies and giving classes on how to make stained glass.
A snake in the brush

I saw this little dude scampering through the Arboretum yesterday and he froze up in some old leaves as I approached. In my non-ophiologist opinion, I would say it’s a gartner snake. So don’t be worried, they’re pretty harmless.

The weirdest thing yet in the Arnold Arboretum

I’ve seen a lot of weird things in the Arnold Arboretum. But two days I stumbled upon this setup hidden in some bushes. Two martini glasses, a bottle of champagne, some orange wedges and two rings. Now don’t go and try to find this - I took a knowledgeable friend to the spot yesterday and she confirmed the “diamond” rings are not real. Too bad, I was hoping to put a down payment on a condo…
