Myles Franey, center, waits for his cue turn to go on stage during the second grade musical revue for their parents on the Friday before the last day of school at Amesbury Elementary School.
Even though this photo was taken a few weeks back …it is still my most recent favorite image. I think the best shots happen , not on stage but backstage when people are nervous and preparing to go on stage.

The end of the year field day is a right of passage for almost every elementary school student. The Thorpe Elementary School in Danvers had its field day recently and I headed over to see what I could come up with. I especially like events like these in that I have time to really think about composition, layering and content. I also always try to use the light to my advantage, but since I was only able to go there around lunchtime, using the light was pretty much out of the question. Here are two images that I liked.

I finished an audio slideshow on the closing of the St. Joseph’s School in Salem, which can be seen below. This is was the last Catholic school in Salem. The ceremony was full of students, teachers, and parents and there were not a lot of dry eyes after the last prayer was said inside the school.
I felt privileged to be able to photograph such a significant event for the town and the school.

Ipswich senior shortstop and captain Krista MacKenzie slides safely into home to score the Tigers first run against St. Mary’s of Lynn during their North Quarterfinals game on Tuesday, June 2 in Ipswich.
The softball field in Ipswich is fairly small, with the sidelines being quite cramped with both the players and fans. I set myself up along the first base line near the first baseman. As the runner made it to third, I was constantly keeping my eye on her, watching to see when she would break for home. I was lucky that none of the St. Mary’s players, who were standing right next to me, did not jump into the frame as she was sliding in. I was surprised by the amount of dirt flying around and also glad that I was able to get a decent shot.

For a photojournalist there’s nothing like a good fire. With that in mind when the opportunity arrived to photograph a plane crash drill I was right there. The first car they lit on fire did not last long and the other media folks didn’t stay around. I’m glad I did because this SUV went up fast and they let it go for a while before putting it out. The Beverly and Danvers fire departments got a good exercise in working through the situation, a job well done.

Pitcher MacKenzie Quinn and Frank Taormina celebrate their teams win over Lincoln-Sudbury in Division 1 North Semifinals Thursday night, Friday June 5, 2009 at Alumni Field in Lowell. Quinn relieved Burbine, who pitched up to the eighth. The new pitcher was doing well and someone said he was a junior, so I kept my eye on him. I moved up into the stands, so my view wouldn’t be blocked. I knew, from shooting many tournament games before, the pitcher would be congratulated. I was right.
Graduation Moments………

A Marblehead graduate raises his arm in the air in celebration after receiving his diploma during graduation exercises held inside the schools gym.
This is a photo typical of a graduation, the one thing that is a little different and makes this photo a little more unique, in my eyes, is capturing the flash from a parent in the audience. Besides being a little remarkable that we both photographed this moment at exactly the same fraction of a second it helps add a little more dimension and interest to my photograph.
In almost every graduation ceremony there is usually one person who will make a guesture most others would not. The key to capturing a more unique photo is one, to listen to the crowd. Most of the time the student who gets a lot of applause and cheers may show a little more emotion apon recieving their diploma. The other thing that may help someone to capture a more unique moment is simply to be prepared and ready to photograph with the camera close to your eye and be quick to compose the moment which may only last a second of two.

I recently had an opportunity to do a profile on the Malden crew teams. It came at the perfect time. The team had just completed a great season, with the boys winning the Greater Boston League title and the girls placing second in their division. They were preparing for the station championship that upcoming weekend and I spent the afternoon at their practice.
