Arlington’s own Todd Bearson is a finalist in the New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest this week. You can vote your favorite of the three entries. Bearson’s caption references something that a lot of us are having to deal with right now, budget cuts. Write what you know!

UPDATE: The headline says “cheesy,” because the cartoon features lab rats.

Armenian-Arlingtonian diplomacy

The U.S. Ambassador to Armenia, Marie Yovanovitch, took her message to the banks of the Lower Mysic Lake before delivering a similar message in D.C.

Yovanovitch talked about democracy in Armenia, poverty in the country, and the possibilities of Turkish economic relations, according to The Armenian Weekly.

She also commented on a speech by President Obama, to Armenian Americans, in which he remembered “the 1.5 million Armenians who were subsequently massacred or marched to their death,” but didn’t refer to it as a “genocide.”

“I know there is disappointment and even anger at President Obama’s April 24th statement… But President Obama went further in his statement than any previous American president.”

Sunshine report!

Sometime mid-morning, I caught a glimpse of that burning hot, bright yellow ball in the sky.

It was on Route 2, at the top of the hill, in between the water tower and the Mormon temple. It was brief, and I can’t guarantee that it’s still out there, but if you are searching for some sunshine today, I suggest you seek high ground.

That was my best impression of an old fashioned policeman’s whistle.

Arlington resident Leah Barrett Demers wrote in to say that a backpack was stolen off her porch that contained - among other things - her husband’s wallet, which has sentimental value.

The bag itself was recovered, the credit cards were cancelled and the locks were changed. What Barrett Demers is most concerned about now is the wallet itself, which Barrett Demers gave to her husband Derek Demers in 2005.

It is a kelly green Prada saffiano leather bifold, which looks like the picture below except that it’s bright green.

They also lost a Canon PowerShot and car keys. Anyone with info can call Inspector James Fitzpatrick at 781-316-3916 or e-mail Derek Demers at derekjd@comcast.net.

Cracked

Forget the comedy club, at the Church of Our Savior in Arlington,  the Laughter Club cuts straight to the chase, laughing at their credit card balances and other things that might be cringe-inducing elsewhere.

As odd as it sounds - and it does sound odd in this WBUR segment - self-induced laughter has a lot of benefits. For one, a club-goer said that now when she is cut off in traffic, her first impulse is to laugh. That sounds like reason enough to give it a shot.

Dallin around with artists

The Pierre Menard Gallery in Harvard Square has a show of two turn-of-the-20th-century painters that includes a portrait of a contemporary sculptor named Cyrus Dallin. Those who have not visited the museum in Arlington Center might still recognize his work, which includes the statue of Paul Revere behind Old North Church, the piper atop many Mormon temples, and the kneeling America Indian in the town garden. Dallin’s portrait is in a little room on the right when you walk into the gallery, and it was painted by Thomas Buford Meteyard. Dallin lived in Arlington Heights.

Our “rogue” secretary

Few pols come out looking any good in the coverage of former House Speaker Sal DiMasi’s indictment. After all, it takes more than one man to rig a bid, right?

But in the swamp of corruption detailed in this Globe story, Arlington resident Leslie Kirwan, who also happens to be the secretary of adminstration and finance, comes out looking better than the rest.

According to the story, which is based on the indictment, DiMasi’s cronies thought of Kirwan as a “rogue” secretary because she didn’t go along with their scheme to guarantee a state contract for Cognos.

Rather than play along, Kirwan apparently went to her boss, David Morales, the governor’s chief of staff. Of course, Cognos won the bid anyway, but at least it looks like Kirwan had the right idea to stick up and say something about it.

Bus-ted

This one is a little late… the news broke a couple weeks ago…

090520_bus_driver_paper

Photo is from WHDH Web site.

WHDH reported that a passenger on an MBTA bus caught the driver reading a paper and snapped some photos. The passenger, Elaine Palli, was traveling from Arlington to Cambridge, so she was likely on the 77, though it could have been the 79, 350, or 67, which all go to Alewife.

It looks like the driver is reading the Metro, but its unclear what is going on outside the bus - for instance, whether he is stopped at a light or in traffic, or cruising at 30 mph.

Keep in mind, this was just a short time after the texting driver caused a pile-up on the Green Line.

Arlington private eye in a jam

This sounds straight out of a Raymond Chandler novel.

Private investigator Joseph Cadillac was arrested trespassing in the Harvard dormitory where 21-year-old Justin Cosby was recently murdered. A suspect, Jabrai Jordan Copney, 20, has been arrested.

Cadillac was allegedly trying to take photos of the scene and had snuck into the dorm with his wife. A suspicious student called police and the pair were arrested for trespassing.

He wouldn’t tell the Harvard Crimson who he was working for. I won’t speculate here, but it gets the imagination going.

Anyway, Cadillac works for this private investigator firm, located in Arlington Center.
