It’s all about the ink

There’s been a surge in tattoo shops in Salem lately. Witch City Ink was first addition, opening on the pedestrian mall — read about them on our homepage. Sacred Harp has the Boston Street area covered, and you can read about them in the Business section. They join the long-running Purple Scorpion on Derby Street. All together, sounds like a good time to get some fresh ink, or fill in the fading tattoo you got during that drunken spring break 15 years ago.
Horrible Horribles?

The public eye is trained on Beverly following that city’s now-notorious Horribles Parade, which featured floats and signs and more spoofing the “pregnancy pact” in Gloucester. Salem’s Horribles also featured floats, but reports suggest they had a bit more taste than those in neighboring communities. We’re curious what you think: Is the issue worth the hoopla it’s received? Did you attend Salem’s parade, and what do you think? Comment here, or to comment on the record, call 978 739 1312.

A new survey of 500 voters suggests few people believe Gov. Deval Patrick will stay in Massachusetts if his buddy Barack Obama wins the presidential election, but the governor says he’ll stay. What do you think? Cast your vote in our own poll. SSC or SSU?

University status is looking more and more likely for Salem State. Which has us wondering, will previous graduates write down “Salem State College” or “Salem State University” on resumes and such? On one hand, university sure does sound nice — especially for those who earned their graduate degrees there. On the other hand, it might make veteran alumni sound like they only recently earned their diplomas. Plus, is it legal? Or ethical? We don’t want to jinx anything for Salem State, but we’re curious. So, SSC grads, what are your thoughts?
‘Mumbles’ Menino

We’ve never blogged about anything Boston unless it had some obvious Salem connection. But this delightful clip has us breaking our own rule. Last Friday former Speaker of the House Tom Finneran introduced a spelling bee on his WRKO radio show, using Boston Mayor Menino’s garbled English. The results are classic — think “jumbletron” and other, more unpronouncable words. Since our Salem readers must be familiar with Menino’s English from Sox parade announcements and such, here’s the link: http://wrko.podzinger.com/viewMedia.jsp?e=20028633&col=en-all-pod_wrko-ep&q=

There will be no Kate Hudson sightings this time, but aspiring actors — and those who just want to try out the on-set experience — are needed for a commercial that’s filming in Salem Wednesday, May 28.
A Rhode Island bank will be shooting a commercial featuring local actors Bob Murphy and Erik Rodenhiser. They’ll be playing two guys receiving awards for their banking decisions, so expect an awards-show setting. Extras are needed to play the part of the audience.
Interested? Go to CinemaSalem promptly at noon on Wednesday. (They’ll shoot from about 12:20-1 p.m. but extras must arrive early. Dress professionally, like a banker, for your best chance to be included.
Bonus: the first 75 people to show up will reportedly be handed $10.

After much build-up, filming began today for “Bride Wars,” a Hollywood flick that has Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway as friends who become rivals after scheduling their weddings on the same day. The movie also stars Candice Bergen, who reportedly plays a wedding planner.
Hawthorne Boulevard and the Essex Street Pedestrian Mall are overflowing with crews preparing to shoot a wedding scene in the Peabody Essex Museum’s East India Marine Hall. They’ll be filming until late today and will be breaking down the set tomorrow before departing.
Has anyone had any fun celebrity sightings? Are you one of the 300 extras participating in the shoot? Blog about it here, and send photos to salem@cnc.com if you want to see them in print.

Salem’s joined a new youth football league that organizers say liberates players and cheerleaders from the Pop Warner system. Read the story on our homepage, “No hard feelings, Pop,” and tell us what you think. A better option, or the end of an era, or both?

The staff of the Salem Gazette and wickedlocalsalem.com feel lucky to work in one of the first industries to welcome women. It didn’t happen overnight, but today women hold some of the highest positions in journalism. This blog has been posted to encourage readers to share their experiences: The pros and cons to being a working woman; the obstacles women still face and the strides made for equality. We also want to share that the Gazette recently unveiled a special section on women in Salem’s business community. As of this week, you can see nearly all of this coverage online — articles, photos, opinions and resources. Visit our Business section or go straight to www.wickedlocal.com/salem/news/business.)
