Raise your hand if you think global warming has anything to do with the amount of rain we have had of late.
What the heck is going on? Could you imagine if this was snow instead of rain.
Since this is vacation season, tell us if the weather has anything to do with whether you keep your vacation plans or change them.
If you have changed them, what played a greater role in changing your plans weather or gas prices?

In the recent past, Wakefield has been unceremoniously placed in the spotlight. News reports have inundated the pages of local, regional and national newspapers and time has been committed on television and radio stations on the subject of the arrest of a woman named Candice Houlihan, allegedly of Wakefield.
Houlihan was arrested on outstanding warrants for motor vehicle infractions stemming from incidents that occurred in 2004. Typically this would not grace the pages of a publication or merit TV and radio time. However … of her own admission she has been romantically involved with N.Y. Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez.
First of all, Red Sox fans would say that was her first mistake. Secondly, she probably should have kept her indescretions to herself. Thirdly and probably more importantly, she shouldn’t have let the charges against her go so long.
But, with so many other things going on in this community, lack of school funding, empty storefronts on Main Street and North Avenue, no place to park and more nail salons than you can count on one hand in town, do you really think this is news?
We’d like to hear what you think.

This economy’s budget crunch has sent the school department into a tossle. There are all kinds of rumors floating around about a school closing, redistricting plans and schedule changes. Whether you’re a parent or not, you must have an opinion on what is happening. Better yet, if you are a teacher or a school administrator this might be a great place to tell everyone what is up.

Since April the town of Wakefield has been grappling with how to fund the additional appropriations voted. The referendum did not bring about a change in the way the town voted in April. Although it is not a last ditch effort, the 11th hour effort is this Special Town Meeting where town leaders are hoping to revert to the originial recommendations of the Finance Committee and nulify the additional appropriations for the Police and Fire overtime budgets, the DPW budget and the library budgets.
Will you go to the Special Town Meeting and how will you vote?

While we expect people to retire periodically and new regimes to establish themselves, we didn’t see either of these announcements coming.
Fire Chief David Parr has tendered his letter of retirement, effective on his birthday, Sept. 5. He will be taking a job with U.S. Department of Homeland Security as a Regional Fire Program Specialist. He will work out of the FEMA Region 1 Boston office.
The other announcement is a little bit sketchy, but we have it on good authority that the Superintendent of Schools Joan Landers has accepted letter of retirement from Assistant Superintendnet of Personnel and Finance Peter DeRoeve. This is effective on September 30.
Visit www.wickedlocalwakefield.com for details on these retirements as they become available.

School budget - make cuts or suck it up

Wakefield is coming up on a round three of trying to figure out what to do about funding school budgets. How do you feel about the school budget and has your opinion changed since town meeting? Should Wakefield residents vote to fund the school budget as originally requested at all cost and provide students with the programs and teachers they deserve or should the schools be forced to cut at an equal rate as other town departments?
