Praise for Sacramone

Although Alicia Sacramone is justified in being somewhat disappointed in her Beijing Olympics performance, she has received much praise here at home.
Sacramone faced her first major challenge in the team gymnastics final where she fell off the balance beam and then stumbled on her floor routine. The next, and somewhat bewildering event, occurred in the individual vault finals where she was knocked out of contention for a medal by a Chinese gymnast who landed on her knees and still managed to beat Sacramone.
Regardless, Sacramone is still a hometown hero and Winchester hopes to honor her as such in coming weeks.
“I think to compete and to rise to that level … with literally billions of people looking at you, I think she’s a winner and Winchester is proud,” said Chairman of the Board of Selectmen Roger Berman. “As Winchester residents, we all swelled with pride having her there [in Beijing].”
“It’s often times in adversity rather then success … that you really show your strength of character,” said Town Manager Mel Kleckner.

Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone admits he has a personal stake in his most recent high-profile case.
This week, a Winchester man was indicted and arrested for allegedly conspiring to suborn perjury in connection with the investigation into the 1993 unsolved murder of Dr. Linda Goudey, 42, of Stoneham.
Leone recalled, as an assistant district attorney attempting to prosecute a suspect in the Stoneham doctor’s killing, promising Goudey’s family that he would “unravel the truths” of how she was killed.
His office announced this week that Winchester doctor Timothy Stryker, 56, was indicted on Friday by a Middlesex County Grand Jury on one count of conspiracy to commit subornation of perjury, seven counts of subornation of perjury, one count of willfully misleading a police officer, and three counts of conveying something of value to a witness, according to a press release from Leone’s office.
Stryker was arrested outside his house at approximately 11 a.m. by Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office.
Stryker, Goudey’s boyfriend at the time of her death, has remained a suspect throughout the entirety of the homicide investigation, according to Leone’s office.
“Handyman” Richard Chambers, a 44-year-old Woburn resident and patient of Dr. Stryker, was also indicted on one count of conspiracy to commit subornation of perjury, three counts of subornation of perjury, four counts of perjury, three counts of willfully misleading a police officer, and two counts of conveying something of value to a witness.
