The state high school sports tournament gets underway this week in basketball and hockey. Saugus hockey has returned to the postseason for the first time in three years. Marblehead boys basketball is No. 1 in Division 2 North after completing their best season in decades. Swampscott girls hoop hopes to continue its dominance over rival Winthrop in Division 3 North for another year. But one thing’s for sure the action should be pretty intense for the fans in all the games. Let’s know what you think will happen over the next fortnight. And root on your team to the state title.

By this time, the depression hovering over Patriots Nation should be subsiding, well maybe not! Once again, New Yorkers proved their arrogance and are certainly not gracious winners. Must remind them that their beloved New York Yankees are still owners of the biggest choke in the history of sports. Really now, they were up three games to NONE and blew it. And they haven’t been the same since then. Feel better, I certainly do. Now it’s your turn to do some venting…..

You know with those N.Y. tabloids around, the hype surrounding the Super Bowl would begin posthaste. They couldn’t resist showing a photo of Tom Brady wearing a boot to protect his allege injured ankle or whatever. Do they will think Brady’s going to sit out the Super Bowl? They should know he’s no LT, the San Diego Chargers alleged superstar running back. And for that matter, Brady had a high ankle injury before the 2002 Super Bowl against the Rams, and you know how they turned out. File this under: Wishful thinking on the part of those Giant fanatics.

We want to know what you think about your favorite high school football team and its Thanksgiving Day rival. Let’s start off with the odds on an incident-free game between Marblehead and Swampscott. What’s the over/under in the Danvers/Gloucester game? Hey, Saugus fans, let’s us know what you think about the Sachems sudden rise to contention. What or who’s behind their sudden success? Do you pick Malden or Do you pick Medford in their longstanding rivalry. Of course, we know Medfa people will choose the Mustangs. But rivalries aside, go out and watch the games Thursday morning, the weatherman promises to cooperate.

During the Gloucester High boys soccer team’s tournament game against Madison Park, two opposing players were penalized with a red cards, giving the Fishermen a one-man advantage (red cards result in the team losing a player on the field). Gloucester ended up winning the game, and one has to think playing 11-on-10 gave the Fishermen a huge advantage in a key game.
While pretty much no one around here would argue against any Fishermen win (and it’s also pretty safe to assume Gloucester would have gone on to win this one without said advantage, having established an early lead with the rock-solid Dom Braga in net), what if the shoe were on the other foot? Is the punishment for a red card too harsh? Or is it something that you would like to see happen in other sports as well?

Stoneham girls soccer coach Sharon Chapman wishes they had instant replay in high school after her team lost to Danvers in overtime on a goal that hit the crossbar, but the referee claimed it broke the plane. The controversial call cost the Spartans an opportunity to beat perennial power Danvers in a Division 2 North state tournament game. Oh well, like we used to say for the Red Sox: “Wait ’til next year!”

After years of humiliating losses, the Saugus High football team is making up for lost time this season with a 2-2 NEC Small Division record, and 5-3 overall. They lost to Swampscott and Beverly by less than a touchdown, otherwise they would be looking at a possible Super Bowl playoff berth. Who knew that Saugus was just not a hockey town.
